Farson, Wyo. — The Wyoming Department of Health has issued a recreational use advisory for Eden Reservoir in Sweetwater County due to a harmful cyanobacteria bloom, more commonly known as blue-green algae.

On August 5 satellite images from the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network showed a higher concentration of cyanobacteria covering a large portion of Eden Reservoir. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality visited the reservoir three days later to collect water samples.

The results of those samples are still pending.

The Department of Health issues advisories to inform the public that there could be health risks for people and animals in areas where the blooms occur.

Water bodies under a recreational use advisory are not exactly closed since the algae may only be present in parts of the water body and conditions can change often. The advisory will remain in place until the bloom is completely gone.
