Lyman, WY.   –  On February 1st, 2018 a fatal crash occurred at milepost 48 on Interstate 80 near Lyman, Wyoming.

A 2013 Toyota Tundra was traveling eastbound on Interstate 80, when the vehicle drifted off of the highway to the left and struck a delineator post. The driver steered his vehicle to the right in effort to re-enter the roadway. The vehicle then collided with median side of the bridge deck guardrail face. The vehicle then traveled along the bridge deck before it rolled over the guardrail and land on the vehicle’s roof, onto the I-80 Business Loop below.

At approximately 0600 a.m., a passer-by on I-80 Business Loop observed the crashed Toyota Tundra and called 911 and Troopers were dispatched to the area.

The adult female passenger, despite properly wearing her seat belt, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult male driver, who was also properly wearing his seat belt, was transported from the scene by ambulance and was then transported via helicopter to the University of Utah Medical Center. The driver is currently in critical but stable condition due to head trauma. A one-year-old juvenile who was secured in a child safety seat; a three-year-old juvenile who was secured in a child safety seat; and a 10-year-old juvenile who was wearing his seat belt were transported to via ground ambulance to the Evanston Regional Hospital where they were treated and released to family members. Fatigue is being investigated as a leading cause of this crash and during the investigation it was determined the crash occurred around 2:00 a.m.

The driver of the Toyota has been identified as 31-year-old Green River, Wyoming resident Samuel Smith.

The deceased passenger has been identified as 30-year-old Green River, Wyoming resident Kymbrlee Smith.

This crash resulted in the six highway fatality in Wyoming for 2018 compared to six fatalities in 2017, six in 2016, and eleven in 2015 during this same time period.

At approximately 5:48 this morning, Bridger Valley Fire and EMS responded to I-80 for a truck that had rolled off the interstate coming to a rest on its top between the bridge decks at Exit 48. Crews worked to extricate the family of 5. Two ambulances transported 4 patients to Evanston Regional Hospital with one adult being pronounced deceased at the scene. The Wyoming Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.
