Rock Springs, WY. – A suspect in a Utah armed robbery and kidnapping was captured in Rock Springs Tuesday morning.
At about 6:18 AM, Sweetwater County Deputy Sheriff David Henderson was notified of a stolen 2018 Chevrolet Traverse with Utah license plates in the area.
Henderson, assisted by other deputies and Rock Springs police officers, stopped the Traverse and arrested the suspect, Richard Brandon Mendoza, 46, of Sparks, Nevada.
Mendoza is accused of kidnapping a man and stealing his SUV from Brigham City, Utah on Tuesday morning. The victim was washing his car at around 1:30 a.m., when he was approached by Mendoza, and told at knife point to drive until the gas ran out.
At around 2:30 a.m., the kidnapped man was able to fight back and escape Mendoza, when he was instructed to stop at an ATM in Clearfield, UT. Mendoza, however, evaded police by driving off in the victim’s Traverse.
Police used the vehicles on-board OnStar system to track Mendoza’s progress along I-80 in Wyoming, which eventually led to his capture.
Mendoza was charged in 2nd District Court with felony aggravated robbery and kidnapping charges, and a misdemeanor charge of possession of a weapon by a restricted person.
