Because it is a commercial airport, the Idaho falls Airport is required by the FAA to conduct a full scale disaster drill every 3 years, in order to test the airports readiness to respond to an actual emergency.
The airport held this drill on Wednesday with the help of volunteers from Dr. Slaughters House of Terror and local EITC Nursing and Dental students playing the part of victims.
Local emergency agencies took part in the simulation for the purposes of training, icluding members of the Idaho Falls Fire Department, Idaho Falls Police department, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
During the event, emergency responders had to extinguish a mock aircraft accident fire within three minutes from the initial call. They also had to assist and treat mock victims, while transporting them to safety, as if this was a real situation.
The purpose of the drill is to test the airports emergency response time and protocol. Officials feel that this a good time to test emergency crews because of the many big events scheduled, that they will need to be ready to respond to if needed.
