SOUTH SALT LAKE, UT.(AP) — A man who was a passenger in a car that fatally rammed a police officer in a Salt Lake City suburb has been arrested on suspicion of murder, burglary and other charges.

South Salt Lake police said 43-year-old Jeffrey Don Black of Taylorsville was arrested Monday night in the killing Saturday night of Officer David Romrell, who was investigating a burglary.

Officers fatally shot the vehicle’s driver, 31-year-old Felix Anthony Calata, after he was ordered to stop but instead accelerated and struck Romrell.

Police initially said they didn’t have probable cause to arrest Black but police spokesman Gary Keller later said pleas by Romrell’s widow prompted them to reopen their investigation and collect more evidence.

Black told reporters he was with Calata to recover money owed Calata by a woman.
