Casper, WY. — The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality has received a $1.6 million grant from the U.S. EPA to help clean up contamination from leaking underground petroleum storage tanks.

The grant money comes from a trust fund that was created by Congress in the mid-eighties, and is financed by a .1-cent nationwide gas tax. The purpose of the Trust Fund is to address petroleum leaks from federally-regulated underground storage tanks. The trust fund was expanded in 2005 to include leak-prevention activities.

Wyoming will use the money to help financially support the cleanup personnel.
