Newcastle – The Newcastle Longhorns won both games played on Sunday in the Gillette Memorial Baseball Tournament. Because of the unique scheduling and bracketing of this tournament, the Longhorns ended up playing Belle Fourche in back to back games. The first game was a tightly contested event when in the second inning the Belle Fourche Bombers were able to score three runs to take a 3 to 1 lead over Newcastle. The Longhorns managed to claw their way back into the game with runs in the 4th, 5th, and 7th innings to tie the game at 4 to 4. Going in to extra innings the Longhorn offense exploded for 6 runs then held the Belle Bombers scoreless for a final score of 10 to 4.
The second game saw Newcastle score single runs in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th innings while keeping Belle Fourche scoreless until the 6th inning. The single run scored by Belle Fourche wasn’t enough though and the game ended at 3 to 1 with a Newcastle victory. The Longhorns ended the tournament with 3 wins and 1 loss, marring thier perfect record and are now 13 and 1 on the season.
