Sardine Canyon, UT. – 26 year-old Broc M. Riley of Logan, Utah was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Tuesday, July 10, while traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 89/91 in Sardine Canyon. Callers reported the crash at around 5:56 p.m. Riley’s 2003 Mercury Sable swerved between two other vehicles then struck the center concrete barrier, launching the vehicle across two lanes of southbound traffic. The vehicle then went off the shoulder, jumped a large ditch and crashed into the mountainside.
Riley was the only person in the vehicle, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash itself. Riley was said to have been wearing a seatbelt, but wasn’t wearing it properly, and as a result he was ejected and died on impact.
Officials with the Utah Highway Patrol suspect that cellphone use, alcohol use, and high rates of speed were all factors involved in the crash.
