Wyoming beat Utah Valley, 74-68 on Wednesday evening.

The game started with the Pokes off to a quick start with an early lead, 11-2. Utah Valley closed the gap with a 9-2 run. Midway through the first half, the Cowboys lead by 10, with the score 23-13. The Wolverines pushed back tying the game at the 2:52 mark. UW lead at the end of the first half, 39-33 following a 6-point scoring run.

The second half stayed close until the Pokes rattled off an 11-3 run. The game was tied at 65 after some more back and fourth exchanges. The two teams exchanged the lead twice and were tied with a series of free throws, but by the 2:06 mark the Cowboys held a 69-68 lead. With 43 seconds remaining Senior guard Jason McManamen’s layup through contact sealed the win for Wyoming, 74-68.

McManamen’s layup gave him 1,001 career points, giving him the honor of being the 35th Cowboy to reach 1,000 points. (He is also the fifth Wyoming native to accomplish the feat).

With the win, Wyoming advances to the finals of the College Basketball Invitational. The best of 3 championship series starts Monday. The Cowboys will face Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. Monday night. Then, they will return home next Wednesday, March 29 to host the second game of the series. If a third game is necessary it would be played next Friday, March 31.
