Salt Lake City, UT. – A School spokeswoman with the University of Utah says that two people were treated for burns in a chemical explosion incident at the Emma Eccles Jones Medical Research Building at around 5 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Fire officials who responded to the call say that the chemical explosion did force an evacuation of the laboratory, but that the evacuation was later lifted around two hours later, as cleanup efforts continued on the third floor.
According to the Salt Lake Fire Department, the chemical reaction that led to the explosion was a result of a nitric acid spill, however, the investigation is on-going. The extent of the injuries to the two people involved are not known at this time.
