Salt Lake City, UT. – The Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee has approved Utah Senator, Karnen Mayne’s proposal, that would look to make killing a security guard or a paramedic an offense punishable by the death penalty in Utah.
Mayne feels that her plan would help to protect first responders who could be targeted when they arrive at a crime scene.
The proposal was approved 5-1, allowing the bill to move to the Senate floor for further consideration.
Opponents caution that adding to Utah’s existing list of 60 capital crimes, could jeopardize the states capital punishment laws and lead to halting of executions due to too many factors, as it has in other states.
The Utah Chiefs of Police Association has voiced their support of the proposal, citing that all first responders put themselves in harm’s way in order to protect the public.
